Below the Watnocol Glacier are seven active volcanoes. Among them are Gramswarten, Bardarbunga, and Quarkfjol. Occasional eruptions of these volcanoes cause glaciers to melt and flood. One such eruption in 1362, associated with the Watnocol Glacier, caused a great deal of flooding. Also in 1727 such a great flood situation was created. There are about 30 other small glaciers in the Watnocol Glacier. The largest of these glaciers is the Bridemarkurjokul Glacier. Havanadalshnakur, considered to be the highest peak in Iceland, is also located within the Vatnayokul Glacier.
