Since the inception of the Icelandic Glacier Science Association in 1950, research on this glacier has been conducted every year.

Below the Watnocol Glacier are seven active volcanoes. Among them are Gramswarten, Bardarbunga, and Quarkfjol. Occasional eruptions of these volcanoes cause glaciers to melt and flood. One such eruption in 1362, associated with the Watnocol Glacier, caused a great deal of flooding. Also in 1727 such a great flood situation was created. On both occasions major property damage occurred.

There are about 30 other small glaciers in the Watnocol Glacier. The largest of these glaciers is the Bridemarkurjokul Glacier. Havanadalshnakur, considered to be the highest peak in Iceland, is also located within the Vatnayokul Glacier. In addition, the Yokulsarlan Lagoon is one of the scenic spots located inside the Vatnokul Glacier.

Yokulsarlan Lagoon

The Yokulsarlan Glacier Lagoon is fed by the Bridemarkurjokul, the largest glacier in the Vatnokul. At 284 meters deep, Glacier Lagoon is the deepest reservoir in Iceland. The water of Yokulsarlan, a beautiful glacial lagoon, is brighter than any other lagoon. Due to the beauty of the lagoon, four films were shot here.
